Dakota Daughters- The Journey Museum & Learning Center

The Journey Museum & Learning Center is excited to announce the next event in our Spring Learning Forum series, “Dakota Daughters”.Beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 4th, experience a narrative of the events leading up to Wounded Knee from the viewpoints of three cultures, Euro- American, African-American and Native American. This program is made possible by the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

“Dakota Daughters” Learning Forum will be held in The Journey’s Wells Fargo Theater. Lillian Witt, Joyce Jefferson and Geraldine Goes In Center describe events in the westfrom 1865 to 1890. Witt will play Sadie Bab- cock, a rancher’s wife. Jefferson will take on the role of Maddie Richardson, engaged to a Buffalo Soldier and Goes In Center will portray Kimemela, Sitting Bull’s Daughter. These three woman, although fictional, represent the very real hopes, fears, beliefs and values held by Euro-American, African-American and Lakota women foremothers.

Joyce Jefferson earned a BS in English at Black Hills State University. Through her business, Joyce Jefferson Creates Stories in Song, she provides performances that weavenarration, poetry and song. She is an independent scholar with the South Dakota Humanities Council. Lillian Witt grew up on a South Dakota ranch. She earned a BA inJournalism/History at Chadron State College, Chadron, NE. and is a published author and independent scholar with the South Dakota Humanities Council. Geraldine Goes In Center, Oglala Lakota, is from Wamblee, SD. She prides herself on being Ina (mother) to four strong Cunkshi’s(daughters) and Unci (grandmother) of many beautiful Takojas. She earned a BS in Human Services and a minor in counseling from Oglala Lakota College. Geraldine is a published writer and gives presentations on Lakota diet and foods.

Learning Forums are wide-ranging, thought-provoking presentations. After the performance, a meet and great with the presenters including light snacks and refreshments willfollow in the museum lobby. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, half-off for members & free for students with a paid adult/senior admission (includes museumadmission).

The Journey Museum and Learning Center was established in 1997 and is conveniently located in downtown Rapid City at 222 New York St, 2 blocks east of the Rushmore PlazaCivic Center right across from the Club for Boys.
