Join Custer State Park for a First Day Hike!
Start the New Year outdoors with us!
First Day Hikes is a nationwide initiative encouraging people to get outside and enjoy nature.
This tradition began in 1992 in Massachusetts and has since spread to state parks across the US.
On January 1, 2025, Custer State Park will offer three unique hikes, varying in distance and rigor.
Choose the one that suits you best!
Hike Options:
8:30 a.m CCC Sawmill Hike
2.2 miles – moderate
Meet at Blue Bell Stables
Expect uneven terrain overlooking French Creek. See the remains of CCC Camp Narrows’ sawmill and hear about their enduring legacy.

10:00 a.m. Legion Lake & Badger Hole
1.7 miles – easy to moderate
Meet at Legion Lake Trailhead
Expect uneven terrain and a blend of lakeside, rock outcroppings, and pine forest. Get inspiration for your new year by taking in the natural beauty of Custer State Park that influenced Badger Clark’s writings.

1.8 miles paved wheelchair and stroller accessible
Meet at the main Visitor Center
Expect a combination of full sun meadows and pine forest. Bighorn sheep, white-tailed deer, turkeys, and an occasional bison frequent this trail.
